Becoming a Beautycounter Brand Advocate

As a busy mom running a marketing business, I was looking for my tribe of girlfriends that could relate to my stage in life. As a long-time researcher of clean products, well let’s be real I’m a researcher of all kinds of things. I was eager to find a skincare line that made me feel good, performed well yet still had clean ingredients. Allowing me to feel more put together as I navigated the busy and exciting phase of life I was in. Isn’t it amazing what a good cream and a little lip gloss can do for your mental state?

I have always had very sensitive skin so for a long time I have always been conscious of what I put on my skin in hopes of avoiding adverse reactions or rashes. I use the EWG Skin Deep Database regularly to review ingredients in my lotions and makeup, this is a super helpful tool for finding particular ingredients and products. Although helpful, sometimes I would get overwhelmed with all the results and choices. Where would I begin? I could not always find the particular products from certain brands as I was freshly recovered from a serious eczema outbreak and wanted to avoid any skin reactions.

I kept hearing about this brand “Beautycounter” but I didn’t know much about it. I decided to order a few products and see how my skin would feel. I figured why not give it a try, that was back in April of 2019. My first order included a day cream, concealer, blush and sunscreen. From the first order of products, I was actually hooked. Several friends stopped to mention how good my skin had been looking. I realized there must be something different about these products that is actually getting the job done. I finally found products that worked well for my sensitive skin, provided protection from the sun, and made me feel good about my maturing skin! By my second order, I added the Band of Beauty membership because I knew I had found something I really loved. By joining this I get to take advantage of some amazing perks including free gifts, product credit, and free shipping!! My next order included a few of my favorite products from Beautycounter ever. Still nearly three years later, and I can’t go a day without the Counter+ Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm and the Countertime Supreme Cream, and my daughter’s beloved Jellies.

Fast forward, 2 ½ years later, I felt a push to join as a Beautycounter brand advocate. I had been using and loving the high-performing products for nearly 3 years and I wanted to share what I learned with others. Why should I keep this to myself anymore? I had to share that I found high-performing products that I know are safe with my friends and family. Especially since they were always complimenting my skin. On top of it, it is a very low risk to start a clean beauty business. I was immediately drawn to the mission and commitment to provide and advocate for safer skincare and beauty for everyone. Their transparency and inclusiveness was something that I really valued in their brand. I was craving a creative outlet and was immediately drawn to the network of like-minded, smart businesswomen that have joined together as a powerful community for a greater good. I am not someone who wears makeup all the time; but I do care deeply about all of our health and wellness through clean, future minded products.

What Exactly is Beautycounter?

Beautycounter products aren’t 100% natural, but they do avoid most of the commonly used toxic ingredients. They have a Never List of 1800+ ingredients that you’ll never find in their products, including: parabens, phthalates, and formaldehyde. As a mother to a young daughter, reading studies about teenagers seeing a dramatic drop in toxic chemicals from switching cosmetics really hit home so I wanted to educate others about what could be lurking in your skincare and cosmetics cabinets. A major federal law has not been passed to regulate the personal care industry since 1938. On top of that over 80,0000 new chemical compounds have been added to our products for various reasons. With only around 20% of those chemicals being regularly tested for human safety. Many of these ingredients are known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and highly irritating allergens.

Here are some ways Beautycounter stand out as a leader in Clean Beauty:

Never List

In the United States only 30 ingredients are banned in personal care products compared to the 600 in Canada and 1,800+ This includes things like parabens, phthalates, oxybenzone, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and formaldehyde.

Direct Retail Company

I get it, people immediately worry that you will be hassled to buy things from another multi-level marketing (MLM) company. Honestly, I was hesitant to jump into the business opportunity because of the undesirable feelings towards the MLM approach. But this was a brand I loved and I must say if you love clean performing beauty products, you will really be missing an opportunity if you immediately avoid this brand because of their business structure. What makes Beautycounter different is they are a direct retail company. You do not have to become a consultant or member to try the products so anyone can try these out! Anyone can purchase Beautycounter online anytime or at one of the Beautycounter retail locations as well as through a consultant. We are always transparent about the ingredients and sources, and they always have clear labeling. This makes it easy to read about the ingredients as well as banned chemicals in the product.

Advocacy

Beautycounter is dedicated to making changes on the legislative level and creating a safe skin care movement. They are working to reform the current laws, in hopes that other personal care companies will follow strict safety guidelines. Beautycounter celebrated their 9th birthday on March 4th 2022 and are valuable to the fight for cleaner beauty. Together in these last 9 years, Beautycounter has helped to pass 10 health-protective laws including

  • Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act (CA,MD)
  • Toxic-Free Kids Act
  • Safer Fragrance Bill
  • Sustainable Chemistry Research & Development Act
  • Pollution Prevention for Our Future Act
  • Cleaning Product Right to Know Act
  • Microbead-Free Waters Act
  • Safer Salon Bill
  • The Safer Sunscreen Bill
  • Counteract Coalition

Rigorous Screening & Testing Process

Beautycounter uses rigorous screening to make sure their products meet the highest standards for safer beauty. They follow a five step ingredient screening process including: ban intentional (see Never List), screen rigorously, learn constantly, and source responsibly, and share transparently. They screen every potential ingredient, test raw materials and even finished products on a case-by-case basis. All of these are third party tested as well as testing all of their color cosmetics for heavy metal contamination for the most maximum accuracy. They strive for non-detectable levels of lead, cadmium, nickel, mercury, arsenic, and other toxic elements. They also work with academic and non-profit partners to perform industry-leading research on ingredient safety and work toward greater transparency by sharing their scientific findings.

Sustainable Packing

Beautycounter’s packaging has no harmful chemicals that could potentially leach into the product formulas. They opt for glass, safer plastic, and sustainable paper. By 2025, the goal is that 100% of packaging will be, recyclable, refillable, reused, or compostable. With Beautycounter, you are choosing clean beauty products that protect your health and the environment.

Certified B Corporation

Beautycounter is a certified B corporation meaning they have the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. The “B” in B Corporation stands for Benefit. This means that unlike the traditional corporate structure, Beautycounter considers people, the planet, and profit. There most recent B score is – 97.7 – their highest ever.

My Favorites

You may not want to switch all your products at once as it can be an overwhelming process as well as not great for your skin. Switching product by product can help your skin adjust and I definitely took it slow when switching to cleaner products. Honestly, I am still learning more and more about “greenwashing” and being careful about what is advertised. I have products I buy and love from other brands as well as trying out DIY options when I want to save money. There are many great clean beauty products on the market today; but, Beautycounter has led the way in advocacy, transparency, and rigorous screening for harmful ingredients. No more googling ingredients and products in the drugstore aisles anymore. I have found products that seriously work and are safe as can be. I feel like good skincare is worth the investment of time and money to see good results.

Beautycounter Skincare Favorites

Countertime Line

You can start slow when using a new regimen. I have dry skin and was looking for anti-aging properties to add into my skin care. I started with the Countertime Supreme Cream. This rich, deeply hydrating cream reduces fine lines and wrinkles, consists of plant derived ingredients, and uses tripeptides to improve skin elasticity. Bakuchoil has results comparable to retinol without side effects as well as Swiss Alpine rose. This boosts skin antioxidant defense and fights inflammation. I have since added the full regimen to my day and evening routine. You can save money by buying a full regimen that fits your skin needs. For finding your most specific skincare needs try taking the Beautycounter skin care survey. Some of my other favorites from the Countertime Line are the Lipid Defense Cleansing Oil and the Mineral Boost Hydrating Essence, which is nourishing, lightweight toner.

Counter+ All Bright C Serum

I use this serum every day as part of my morning skin care routine. It is a game-changing serum that brightens my skin, reduces appearance of dark spots from the sun and even helps smoothen out my wrinkles. I definitely feel this provides an instant glow and can be worn with or without makeup!

Counter+ Overnight Resurfacing Peel

Another “hero” product that I really appreciate is the resurfacing peel. This is a leave-on AHA/BHA peel which improves skin texture and clarity of pores, without irritation or over-drying. I use this overnight treatment 2-3X times a week.

Counter+ Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm

One of the first products I ordered from Beautycounter and still one of my favorites. This is the ultimate multitaker product. It can be used as a cleanser, makeup remover, hydrates patches of dry skin, tames fly aways, charcoal mask remover and more!

Beautycounter Makeup Favorites

My makeup routine is very simple most days, but I do have a few favorites to feel put together in five minutes or less.

Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer

I use this tinted moisturizer for a lightweight coverage, especially in the summer because it includes SPF 20, I like that it has sheer-coverage but helps even my skin tone.

Skin Twin Featherweight Foundation

I use this foundation when I am looking for light coverage without the sunscreen. This foundation is now available in 27 shades so you can find the right match for your skin!

Cheeky Clean Cream Blush

I have always been a powder blush user so I was surprised how much I love this cream blush. Especially the chai color! I switched to this cream blush to try the moisturizing formula but also because it is another multitasking product. You can use the color on your cheek, lips or eyes. Plus, I loved the refillable compact which can easily be used to swap out to another shade if you want a new color for a new season, or are just looking for a fresh look.

Beyond Gloss

I love Magnolia Shimmer – the perfect mauve pink with shimmer. I have tried tons of gloss over the years and they were either sticky or did not stay on my lips. This formula is conditioning and provides shine, plus it includes responsibly sourced vanilla. Which smells super good on the lips!

Lid Glow Cream Shadow

As Beautycounter moves to more talc-free formulas, I was not sure how I would like the cream eye shadow. But this award-winning product delivers! I tend to go for a light shimmer, so I have both Aura and Luster. But, there are some other shades that can be blended for a more dramatic look. It soothes and hydrates delicate eyelids so it’s perfect for folks with more sensitive eyes.

Think Big All-in-One Mascara

I can see why this is an award-winner. I have tried many “cleaner” mascaras and was not pleased with the results. Often flaking, not staying on my eyes or causing my eyes to water. I did not even like the original formulation of Beautycounter mascara. But, this mascara is different – it provides lift, length, and volume without harmful ingredients.

Beautycounter Sunscreen Favorites

I think I may have tried every clean sunscreen on the market for babies, children and adults. I research and try new brands each year and use what I find to be the most budget-friendly that is recommended on the skin-deep database. SPF is one of the most important products to have as part as a skincare regimen and is the number one way to prevent skin cancer. My son is very sensitive to most sunscreens so we are very careful about ingredients, safety and sun protection. Here are the sunscreens we reach for most often:

Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Mist SPF 30

I really love spray sunscreens, especially Beautycounter‘s non-aerosol mist, which sprays on white to help guide application and make sure you are fully covered. It’s an effective shield from UVA, UVB & Blue Light rays, while also being reef friendly, safe for children 6 months+ and water resistant.

Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 30

I have this little sunscreen stick in my park bag, pool bag and purse. I really like that it is convenient, water-resistant and moisturizing. Plus a bonus- doesn’t leave a white cast!

Countersun Daily Sheer Defense For Face – SPF 25

When I am not wearing Dew Skin, I reach for this face sunscreen. It is lightweight and perfect coverage without leaving a white cast on my fair skin. It’s the perfect face sunblock to pair with makeup!

Beautycounter Haircare

My experience with Beautycounter’s body and haircare line is fairly new. I have found clean and green body lotions and hand soaps/creams that have worked for my family. But, I have been enjoying the newly formulated and sustainably packaged hair care line by Beautycounter.

Daily Shampoo in Bright Grapefruit

I wash my hair a couple times a week and this shampoo breaks down buildup without stripping my strands and drying my hair out. It is moisturizing and strengthening with a really nice grapefruit scent.

Daily Conditioner in Bright Grapefruit

This conditioner nourishes and detangles with provitamin B5, with grapefruit essential oil. Also smelling great while making my hair extremely soft.
