Mascara is probably the beauty product I get asked about most.

It is also one of the hardest clean beauty swaps to make.

When I first started switching to cleaner products years ago, mascara was the one thing I struggled to replace. I wanted something that gave me long, separated lashes without flaking, smudging, or leaving raccoon eyes halfway through the day. And because I spend so much time outside walking, gardening, and at the pool during the summer, I also needed something that could handle heat and humidity.

After using Beautycounter mascara for years, I have spent the last few years testing nearly every clean mascara I could get my hands on.

The good news?

Clean mascara has come a long way.

The newer formulas actually perform. You no longer have to choose between clean ingredients and beautiful lashes.

If you’re looking for a mascara that works for sensitive eyes and everyday life, here are the ones I’ve tested and what I honestly think about each one.

Why Switch to a Clean Mascara?

Everyone has their own definition of clean beauty. Mascara is one product I recommend swapping because it’s used so close to our eyes every single day.

Many conventional mascaras can contain ingredients like synthetic fragrance, parabens, carbon black pigments, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, or other ingredients that some people prefer to avoid. If you have sensitive eyes like I do, those ingredients can sometimes contribute to irritation or discomfort.

Beyond ingredients, many clean beauty brands are also paying closer attention to sustainable packaging and nourishing formulas that include plant oils and natural waxes.

For me, the biggest benefit has simply been finding formulas that feel comfortable all day without sacrificing performance.

What I Look for in a Mascara

Everyone’s lashes are different, but these are my non-negotiables:

  • Lengthening over dramatic volume
  • No clumping
  • No smudging or transferring
  • Comfortable for sensitive eyes
  • Easy to remove at night
  • Holds up through walks, gardening, and everyday life

My Favorite Clean Mascaras

1. ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara – My Everyday Favorite

If I could only keep one mascara, this would be it.

ILIA continues to be my favorite because it checks every box. It separates beautifully, adds noticeable length without looking heavy, and builds easily if I want a little more drama.

The biggest reason it stays at the top of my list?

It removes effortlessly with my cleansing oil.

Best for:

  • Everyday wear
  • Sensitive eyes
  • Natural-looking length
  • Easy removal

What I love

  • Beautiful separation
  • Long-lasting without feeling stiff
  • Doesn’t weigh lashes down
  • Removes easily

2. Olive Rose HT Volumizing Mascara – My Going-Out Pick

This one surprised me.

The formula is noticeably thicker than ILIA, which creates fuller, more dramatic lashes while still giving impressive length.

When I want my lashes to stand out a little more for dinner, events, or photos, this is usually the one I grab.

I also love that it’s now available in both black and brown. The brown option creates a softer everyday look that feels especially pretty if you have lighter coloring.

Best for:

  • Date nights
  • Special occasions
  • Longer-looking lashes
  • Anyone who likes a fuller lash

What I love

  • Incredible length
  • Rich pigment
  • Easy application
  • Brown and black options

3. Honest Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer

The primer is what makes this one special.

It’s a two-step system with one side acting as a lash primer before applying mascara.

If your lashes are naturally short or fine, the primer gives them extra fullness and helps the mascara build beautifully.

It’s a great option if you want a little more volume without looking overly dramatic.

Best for:

  • Fine lashes
  • Added volume
  • Layering

What I love

  • Excellent primer
  • Great definition
  • Nice buildable formula

4. Counter Think Big All-in-One Mascara

If you were a Beautycounter fan, you’ll feel right at home with this one.

The formula is very similar to the original mascara I wore for years.

It delivers rich color and great coverage, although I occasionally notice a little transfer under my eyes, especially on humid days.

I’ve found that setting my under-eye area with a light dusting of powder helps quite a bit.

It also takes a little more effort to remove, so I recommend using a cleansing balm or cleansing oil.

Best for:

  • Fans of the original Beautycounter mascara
  • Fuller lashes
  • Rich black pigment
  • Clean ingredients

What I love

  • Familiar formula
  • Great coverage
  • Nicely volumizing

5. Tower 28 MakeWaves Mascara

Tower 28 has become a popular, afforable clean makeup brand, especially for sensitive skin.

Their mascara is lightweight, easy to apply, and gives beautiful separation with a flexible brush that makes it easy to coat every lash.

I experienced a little more flaking by the end of the day, but it never irritated my eyes.

For the price, it’s an excellent clean mascara if you’re just getting started.

Best for:

  • Sensitive eyes
  • Everyday makeup
  • Budget-friendly clean beauty

What I love

  • Comfortable formula
  • Great brush
  • Nice separation
  • Affordable

My Overall Ranking

After trying them all, here’s where I landed.

  1. ILIA Limitless Lash – Best overall and my everyday favorite
  2. Olive Rose HT Volumizing Mascara – Best for nights out and extra length
  3. Honest Mascara + Primer Duo – Great if you love a lash primer
  4. Counter Think Big – Clean formula with a little extra removal required
  5. Tower 28 MakeWaves – Nice budget-friendly option for sensitive eyes

Clean Mascaras I’m Planning to Try Next

There are always new launches in clean beauty, and these are next on my testing list:

  • Saie
  • Westman Atelier
  • Kosas

I’ll update this post as I continue testing.

Final Thoughts

Finding a clean mascara used to mean settling for something that flaked, smudged, or barely showed up on your lashes.

Thankfully, that’s no longer the case.

If you have sensitive eyes and want a mascara that performs, ILIA continues to be my top recommendation for everyday wear because it’s lengthening, comfortable, and incredibly easy to remove.

For a little more drama, Olive Rose has quickly become my favorite for evenings and special occasions.

At the end of the day, the “best” mascara is the one that works for your lashes, your lifestyle, and your preferences. The good news is that there are more truly great clean options available than ever before.

If you’ve tried one of these mascaras or have another favorite I should add to my testing list I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Clean beauty keeps getting better, and sharing what actually works helps all of us find products we’ll love.
