As I’ve gotten older, one of the subtle changes I’ve noticed is that my lips are losing pigment. They don’t have the same natural definition they once did, and choosing lip colors online has become tricky. Between undertones, formulas, and finish, it can feel like a guessing game.
That’s what led me to start slowly testing lip liners.
I was looking for the perfect balance of:
- Precision (to redefine my lip line)
- Long-wearing coverage (so I’m not constantly reapplying)
- Clean ingredients where possible
- A reasonable price point
Lip products are deeply personal. Your skin tone, lip moisture, and preference for matte vs. creamy will all play a role. But if you’re navigating pigment loss or simply want more definition, here’s my honest breakdown of the brands I’ve tried.

- Anastasia 2. ILIA 3. Crunchi 4. Counter 5. Tower 28 6. Sacheu
Why Lip Liner Matters More As We Age
As pigment fades, lips can:
- Look thinner or less defined
- Lose their natural shape
- Make lipstick bleed or feather
A good lip liner:
- Restores definition
- Creates symmetry
- Extends the wear of your lipstick or gloss
- Can even be worn alone for a soft, polished look
Think of it as structure for your lips.
Shade – Muted Mauve
This is a true traditional liner.
✔ Excellent precision
✔ Great for shaping and contouring
✔ Long-wearing
✖ Less creamy
✖ Similar performance to Tower 28 at a slightly higher price
If you want a crisp, defined lip line, this delivers. It’s less creamy than some others, which actually makes it great for precision.
That said, since I found the performance similar to Tower 28, I personally reach for Tower 28 more often because of the price.
Best for: Sharp definition and contouring.
2. Ilia – Lip Sketch Hydrating Crayon
Shade: Deco (rose pink)
This was almost perfect for me.
✔ Full coverage
✔ Can be worn alone
✔ Didn’t bleed
✔ Clinically proven to hydrate, plump, smooth & strengthen the barrier
✔ Heavy metal tested
✖ The shade pulled more orange than pink on my skin
The formula is beautiful hydrating but structured. It feels nourishing and wears well.
My only issue was color. Deco looked more orange on me than I expected. I would absolutely buy this again in a different shade.
Best for: Hydration + pigment in one step.
3. Crunchi – Everluxe Lip Crayon
Shade: Plum Kiss
This one offers full, creamy coverage.
✔ Bold pigment
✔ Can be worn alone
✔ Super clean ingredients
✔ Infused with nourishing organic botanicals
✖ Waxy/crayon-like scent (noticeable for me)
This is more of an all-in-one lip crayon than a strict liner. The pigment payoff is strong and it glides beautifully. It stayed on well and could easily replace lipstick for a one-step look.
The only downside for me was the waxy scent, which reminded me of a crayon and felt off-putting. If you are interested in trying this product, I can put you in contact with one of my friends who partners with Crunchi.
Best for: Clean beauty lovers who want liner + lipstick in one.
4. Counter – Lined & Primed Lip Defining Pencil
Shades: Pink Blossom & Cool Berry

One of my top picks.
✔ EWG Verified
✔ Third-party tested
✔ Creamy, full coverage
✔ Long-wearing
✔ Can be worn alone
✔ No bleeding or migrating
Cool Berry is the best shade for my skin tone. Pink Blossom is softer and lighter.
The texture is rich and conditioning, making lips look smooth. It creates the perfect base for layering or you can wear it alone as a satin-matte lipstick.
This formula feels polished and elevated without sacrificing safety standards.
Best for: Clean, high-performance, long-wearing coverage.
5. Tower 28 – One Liner Lip Liner
Shade: Paint My Number
This one. surprised me. It is a top pick for me with a few things to consider.
✔ Balanced precision + creaminess
✔ Long-wearing
✔ Affordable
✔ Easy to pair with lipstick or gloss
✖ Contains Red Lake (something to note if you’re ingredient-conscious). There website states that all products are third-party screened for heavy metals so it does provide reassurance on ingredient safety.
The formula hits a sweet spot, not too creamy, not too stiff. It glides on well but still gives definition. For the price point, this is one of the best values I’ve found.
Best for: Everyday wear with clean-ish ingredients at a reasonable price.
6. Sacheu – Lip Liner STAY-N (Peel-Off Stain)
Shade: 03 Pinked
I had to give one of the viral lip stains a try. This one is very different.
✔ Extremely long-wearing
✔ Very pigmented
✔ Infused with Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin E
✖ Requires waiting for stain to set
✖ Peeling process was messy
✖ Got on my teeth and in my sink
✖ Shade pulled more orange than pink
Application requires clean, dry, exfoliated lips. You apply the product, let it set, then peel it off to reveal a stain.
It definitely lasts but I found the process inconvenient for daily use. The peeling felt messy and impractical for my routine.
Maybe great for a special event, but not something I reach for regularly.
Best for: Long events when you don’t want to reapply.
My Picks – Ranked
- Counter – Clean, creamy, long-wearing, versatile
- Ilia – Beautiful hydrating formula (just find your right shade)
- Tower 28 – Best value + everyday favorite
- Anastasia Beverly Hills – Precision shaping
- Crunchi – Clean + full coverage (if scent doesn’t bother you)
- Sacheu – Event-only option for me
Final Thoughts
If you’re noticing fading lip pigment, lip liner can completely change how your face looks in the best way.
It restores:
- Definition
- Balance
- Confidence
You don’t have to overline dramatically. Even softly tracing your natural lip shape can make your whole face feel more polished.
And remember shades are personal. Undertones matter. What pulls pink on one person might pull orange on another. I learned this the hard way.
If you’re unsure where to start:
- Want clean + high performance? → Counter
- Want hydration + pigment? → Ilia
- Want affordable everyday definition? → Tower 28
I’ll continue testing as I go because finding that perfect shade and formula is worth it. Next brand on my list to try is this trio from FitGlow Beauty.
